Holder's Wood

Walking into Holder's Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. The forest sits just outside Longney in Gloucestershire, and it's the sort of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss entirely. It's a straightforward woodland walk - nothing fancy, no visitor centre or marked trails to speak of, just trees, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near major roads.

The wood itself is dense enough to feel like a proper forest rather than a park, with a decent mix of broadleaf and conifer. You can spend a good hour or two wandering without seeing another soul, which is either brilliant or isolating depending on your mood. Dogs absolutely love it. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's not much in the way of specific attractions - no playground, no café, no interpretation boards. It's honest woodland, really.

Worth doing if you're camping at one of the nearby sites - The Glamping Orchard or Apple Orchard Camping are both within easy reach - and you want a quiet morning walk. Don't expect dramatic vistas or rare wildlife. Do expect good air, space to think, and the sound of actual woodland. Admission appears to be free, though facilities are minimal. Best visited when the ground's reasonably dry; after heavy rain it gets muddy underfoot. Could easily combine with a visit to the Severn Estuary walks if you're in the area for a few days.
