Primrose Hill

The walk up Primrose Hill from Ilkley takes about forty minutes and rewards you with proper views across Wharfedale. It's a modest peak by Yorkshire standards - only 1,329 feet - but the gradient is relentless enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit.

What makes it worth the effort is the clarity of the vista once you're up there. On a decent day you can pick out Pen-y-ghent and Whernside to the north, and the moorland rolls away in all directions. The path itself is well-trodden and straightforward, though it can be boggy in patches after rain. Most walkers combine this with a loop around the Cow and Calf rocks on the adjacent ridge - that's where the real scrambling happens if you fancy it.

This is a fine choice for anyone doing a caravan holiday at Olicana Park or Brown Bank, both within a couple of miles of Ilkley town. You can park in Ilkley itself and set off on foot without faffing about. The round trip from the centre of town takes about two and a half hours at a steady pace, which means it won't dominate your day if the weather turns.

It's not a destination in itself - you're not going to spend hours up there. But it's exactly the sort of half-day walk that makes a caravan break feel properly active without being punishing. Good shoes essential. The exposed moorland gets cold and windy even when the valley floor looks calm.
