Poulton Wood

Poulton Wood sits just outside Hythe, a proper slice of Kent woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a visit if you're in the area. It's a straightforward affair - ancient trees, walking paths that wind through the canopy, and the kind of peace you actually get when there's no gift shop in sight.

This is walker territory, full stop. If your idea of a holiday involves decent boots and a packed lunch, you'll find it worthwhile. The wood itself feels older than the surrounding Romney Marsh flatness, and there's something grounding about that. You're not scrambling up hillsides or hunting for Instagram angles - you're just walking among old growth and listening to what's around you. Kids will manage fine for an hour or so if they're the exploring type, but restless five-year-olds won't find much to grab their attention.

Best time is autumn when the light filters through properly, or spring when everything's doing that frantic green-up thing. Bring a decent map or phone signal, as waymarking can be a touch vague in places. Free access as far as anyone can tell - no entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense.

It slots nicely into a Romney Marsh circuit if you're based at Port Lympne Safari Park or one of the caravan sites nearby. After Port Lympne's crowds, Poulton Wood feels like the antidote - somewhere to reset before heading back for tea. Not destination-trip material on its own, but if you're staying locally, absolutely worth the detour.
