Westenhanger

The ruins of Westenhanger Castle sit just outside Hythe, a proper slice of medieval Kent that most people drive straight past. What remains are fragments of a 12th-century stronghold - crumbling stone walls, a gatehouse, hints of what was once a serious defensive position. It's not going to blow your mind with grandeur, but there's something honest about the decay. You can walk the perimeter, poke around the ruins, and actually feel the weight of centuries rather than queue behind a rope barrier.

This is one for walkers and history types more than families seeking full-day entertainment. Kids might manage twenty minutes before losing interest, unless they're genuinely into spotting medieval masonry patterns. The castle's free to access and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, which means it keeps its character - no gift shop, no car park attendant, just you and some very old stones.

If you're based at Port Lympne Safari Park just down the road, Westenhanger makes for a quick morning detour before heading to the animals. Ditto if you're camping at Daleacres or Fallow Fields - it'll take you half an hour to walk around properly. Go when the light's low and golden; the stonework photographs well and the crowds are non-existent. Hythe itself has decent enough pubs for a post-visit pint, though the castle won't keep you occupied long enough to justify a full day trip on its own.
