Pot Hill

The walk up Pot Hill from Moffat takes you through proper rolling moorland - it's one of those peaks that looks modest on the map but rewards you with views that stretch across the whole of Dumfries and Galloway. On a clear day you can see for miles. The route itself isn't technical, which means families and casual walkers can manage it without needing scrambling experience. Allow a couple of hours there and back, maybe three if you're taking it slowly or stopping for a packed lunch at the top.

Walkers will get the most from Pot Hill. It's the kind of place where you disappear into the landscape - no crowds, no facilities, just heather and sky. The summit marker is modest but the sense of achievement feels earned. Spring through autumn is best, though midge season can be grim in July and August. Winter snow can make footing tricky.

If you're staying at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site - which is excellent, by the way - Pot Hill fits perfectly into a walking holiday. The site itself is well-run and gives you easy access to the Lowland hills without the crowds you'd get on Ben Lomond or Goat Fell. The climb isn't strenuous enough to wear out the legs, which means you could pair it with other walks in the area the same week. Moffat's a handy little town for provisions and pub dinners too.
