Porthmadog Park

The estuary at Porthmadog is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're wandering around the town, maybe grabbing a coffee, and then suddenly you're at the water's edge watching waders picking through the mud flats and the whole landscape opens up. Porthmadog Park itself is a proper nature reserve, the kind of spot where serious birdwatchers come with binoculars and notebooks, though you don't need to be obsessive to enjoy it.

What you're looking at is tidal mudflats and salt marsh - it sounds dull on paper but it's genuinely compelling. In winter, the place fills with migrating birds: curlews, redshanks, dunlin. Summer brings nesting terns and the whole thing has a different character depending on the season and the tide. The walking is straightforward, nothing strenuous, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on how much you want to potter about.

It's excellent for families who can sit still for five minutes, and walkers will appreciate the unspoilt feel of it all. Birdwatchers will absolutely get their money's worth. Casual visitors might find it a bit specialist - there's no café, no visitor centre, no obvious "attractions". You come for the birds and the quiet.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Tyddyn Llwyn is barely half a mile away, or try Black Rock Sands if you want something with more facilities. Either way, the reserve is a proper part of a Porthmadog holiday rather than a box-ticking detour.
