Porthcothan Beach

Golden sand stretches for what feels like miles when the tide's out, making this one of Cornwall's more generous beaches for families with young ones. The waves here pack a proper punch - strong enough to keep serious surfers happy but manageable for confident swimmers. Rock pools appear at low tide on either end, keeping little explorers busy for hours.

Getting down involves a fairly steep path from the clifftop car park, so pack light or make multiple trips with beach gear. The walk back up with tired children and sandy kit tests your patience, but the beach itself more than compensates. Lifeguards patrol during summer months, which gives parents peace of mind.

Surf schools operate from here regularly, and the consistent waves make it a cracking spot for beginners to get their first taste of Cornish surfing. Dog walkers love the space, particularly out of season when restrictions lift.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Watergate Bay Touring Park or Sun Haven Holiday Park, it's well worth the short drive. The village of Porthcothan itself is tiny - just a few houses really - so bring supplies. Early morning visits reward you with the beach almost to yourself, while late afternoon light turns the cliffs a lovely amber colour.
