Porth Dafarch

Dramatic red cliffs plunge into crystal-clear water at this cracking little cove just south of Holyhead. Unlike the more popular beaches that draw the crowds, Porth Dafarch feels properly wild - the kind of spot where you can scramble over rust-coloured rocks and pretend you're the first person to discover it.

Families with older kids will love the rock pooling opportunities when the tide's out. The water's surprisingly clear for this coast, making it brilliant for snorkelling if you don't mind the Welsh Sea temperatures. There's a decent stretch of sand at low tide, though it disappears when the water's up.

Getting down requires a bit of a scramble - not impossible with pushchairs but you'll need to work for it. Worth bringing proper walking shoes rather than flip-flops. The car park's small and fills up quickly on sunny weekends, so early morning visits work best.

It's an easy drive from any of the holiday parks dotted around this part of Anglesey. Silver Bay Holiday Park and Sandy Beach Caravan Park are both within twenty minutes, making this a proper day out option. Pack a picnic though - there's nowhere to grab food once you're here. The beach works well as part of a coastal walk along the Anglesey Coastal Path, with stunning clifftop views in both directions.
