Poltalloch House kitchens

The Victorian kitchens at Poltalloch House are a proper window into how the other half lived - or rather, how they ate. Set in Argyll just outside Lochgilphead, these restored servants' quarters show the sheer machinery required to keep a grand house fed. You'll walk through pantries, sculleries, and cooking ranges that would have had teams of staff moving around them dawn to dusk.

What makes it worthwhile is how unglamorous it all is. The kitchens are functional, sometimes cramped, with original stone sinks and massive cast-iron stoves. There's no pretence here - just the brutal efficiency of Victorian domestic work. History types will find plenty to grab onto; families with younger kids might lose interest after thirty minutes, though there's usually enough detail to keep adults engaged for longer.

The house itself is worth seeing if you've got time, though the kitchens are the real talking point. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing both. Spring and summer visits are nicer for the grounds, though the kitchens themselves don't change season to season.

If you're caravan camping at Lochgilphead Caravan Park up the road, this is an easy afternoon addition to your Argyll itinerary. It's the kind of place that sits between 'worth a detour' and 'might as well since you're passing', depending on how deep your interest in domestic history runs. Better value than many heritage sites, and the staff are generally helpful.
