The moment you walk through the gates at Alnwick Castle's Poison Garden, you're entering something genuinely unsettling. This isn't a conventional flower bed arrangement - it's a collection of plants that can seriously harm you, all clearly labelled with warnings. Deadly nightshade, ricin-producing castor beans, hemlock, monkshood: plants that have killed people throughout history, presented with black gates and an appropriately gothic edge.

It's brilliant for teenagers and anyone with a morbid streak, though younger kids might find it a bit too much depending on their temperament. The garden occupies just a corner of Alnwick's wider grounds, so you're probably looking at 30-45 minutes here unless you're the type to read every single label with forensic attention. The staff take safety seriously - you can't touch anything, and rightfully so.

Northumberland's hardly short on castle visiting, so the Poison Garden works well as a darkly funny companion piece to the main attraction. From Chathill, you're well-positioned for the caravan parks scattered around - Coast and Castles Camping sits just a few miles away if you're based in the area. Worth the visit mainly for the novelty factor and the genuine sense that you're learning something genuinely dangerous. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's unusual enough to break up a standard Northumberland itinerary.
