Planetrees Roman Wall - Hadrian's Wall

The stones here are older than most people realise. Planetrees sits along Hadrian's Wall proper - not a reconstructed section, but genuine Roman masonry you can actually touch. It's near Hexham, tucked into the Northumberland landscape where the wall snakes across moorland with proper views stretching for miles.

What you get is a modest but authentic stretch of the fortification itself. The wall isn't towering - parts are waist-high - but that's rather the point. Two thousand years of weather have done their work. You'll see the carefully laid stones, the ditch still visible alongside, and if you time it right, that golden hour light catches the construction in ways that make you understand why the Romans bothered building it at all.

History buffs will spend good time here, especially if they've read up beforehand. Kids might manage twenty minutes to half an hour unless they're seriously engaged with Roman Britain already. Walkers should definitely include it on a larger route along the wall - the footpath here is excellent and the surrounding hills make it feel purposeful rather than just a roadside stop.

It's free access, which is worth knowing. The nearest proper facilities are in Hexham, a market town five miles away.
