Pitty Wood

Pitty Wood sprawls across several acres of mixed deciduous trees, with winding paths that seem to have evolved naturally rather than been planned by committee.

Dog walkers absolutely love it here - the paths are well-drained and there's enough space for proper off-lead exercise without worrying about livestock. Families with older children who fancy a bit of adventure will find plenty to explore, though pushchair-wielding parents should probably look elsewhere given the uneven terrain.

The wood connects to a wider network of footpaths, making it a decent starting point for longer rambles across the Derbyshire countryside. No facilities to speak of, so bring your own refreshments and prepare for a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured park experience.

It's an easy addition to a holiday based around Carsington Water or the nearby Peak District. Several caravan parks within a few miles, including Carsington Fields and Poplars Farm, make decent bases for exploring this part of Derbyshire. Allow an hour for a proper wander, longer if you're linking it with other local walks. Free access year-round, though autumn brings the best colours and spring offers bluebells if you time it right.
