Ashbourne

The annual Shrovetide Football match defines this market town more than anything else - imagine rugby meets medieval warfare, played through the streets between two goals three miles apart. It's been happening for centuries, and locals still take it deadly seriously. Between the madness of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, Ashbourne settles into its quieter rhythm as one of Derbyshire's more civilised gateways to the Peak District.

Walk the Georgian streets and you'll pass the Tom Fearn memorial, a reminder of the town's industrial heritage, while St. John's Church anchors the market square with proper medieval solidity. The high street has that lived-in feel - not too polished, but hardly struggling either. Ashbourne Library sits in a handsome Victorian building, though most visitors are here for what lies beyond the town limits.

Carsington Water stretches just southeast, a massive reservoir that's brilliant for sailing, cycling, and watching ospreys. The Tissington Trail runs right past the town, following an old railway line through limestone dales and dry stone walls. It's proper Peak District country once you get going - rolling hills, traditional villages, and walking routes that range from gentle strolls to serious hikes.

Getting here couldn't be easier from Derby, just 13 miles south on the A515. The town sits perfectly for exploring both the gentler southern dales and the wilder moorland further north. Park Road Lake offers a bit of peace right in town if you fancy feeding ducks rather than conquering peaks. Base yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks and you've got walking trails, cycling routes, and traditional pubs all within striking distance.
