Chain Sculpture

Standing nine feet tall in the centre of Ashbourne's market square, this bronze sculpture of interlocking chains commands attention. Created by artist Peter Taylor in 1998, it celebrates the town's historic connection to chain-making - an industry that once employed hundreds of locals. The abstract design catches the light beautifully, particularly in the early morning when the market's setting up around it.

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the technical skill involved in casting such an intricate piece, while history buffs can ponder Ashbourne's industrial past. Children seem fascinated by the way the bronze links appear to float impossibly in mid-air. It's not going to occupy you for more than ten minutes, mind you, but it makes a decent focal point for exploring the rest of this proper market town.

The sculpture works well as a quick stop if you're staying at Carsington Water campsite or any of the holiday parks around Hoe Grange - both are less than five miles away. Combine it with a wander through Ashbourne's independent shops and you've got a pleasant morning out. The annual Shrovetide Football match in February sees the sculpture become an unofficial gathering point for spectators, adding another layer to its role in local life.
