Pittleworth trout lake

The lake sits quietly on the Hampshire downs just outside Stockbridge, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick snap-and-dash visit. Pittleworth is a working trout fishery, so the water's kept in pristine condition - you can see the fish moving beneath the surface on a clear day, which is oddly mesmerising. Walking the perimeter takes maybe forty minutes at a leisurely pace, and the views across the valley are genuinely lovely without being showy about it.

For serious anglers, this is obviously the draw - the lake's well-managed and stocked year-round. But even if you're not here to cast a line, the setting works. Families can manage a gentle circuit, though toddlers might get restless since there's not much else to do once you've done the walk. It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're based at The Meadow Glamping or Stockbridge View for a few days, rather than a destination in itself.

I'd ring ahead before visiting to check access arrangements and whether there are any permits needed - it's a private fishery, so they're reasonably protective of it. Go on a weekday morning if you want peace; weekends bring the fishing crowd, which is fine if you like that atmosphere. The real value here is as a breather between bigger Hampshire attractions, a chance to decompress beside water and not much else. Worth the detour if you're staying nearby.
