Pilipala Farm

The wetland walks at Pilipala Farm give you a proper sense of what the Gower Peninsula was like before humans got their hands on it. You're looking at reed beds, shallow pools, and the kind of muddy margins where wading birds actually have something to eat. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means the paths can be boggy and the facilities are minimal - but that's rather the point.

You'll spot lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, the occasional marsh harrier quartering the reeds. Bring decent boots and binoculars. The walk takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, though you can do a shorter circuit if the weather's turning. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile; families with young children might find it a bit samey after forty minutes of "same old reeds, Dad".

It's free to access and run on a shoestring by volunteers, which explains the lack of signage and amenities. The nearest proper facilities are back in Swansea town, so plan accordingly. Given the caravan parks at Nicholaston Farm and Oxwich are both nearby, this works well as a half-day addition to a Gower break rather than a destination in itself. Early morning or dusk is when the birds are most active, and spring or autumn migration periods are genuinely spectacular. Winter's quiet but atmospheric if you don't mind the cold.
