Pikenaze Hill

The walk up Pikenaze Hill rewards you with proper views across the Pennine moorland - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people choose to camp around Holmfirth rather than heading somewhere flashier. It's a straightforward fell summit that won't take you more than an hour or so from the road, making it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites like Whitegate Leisure or Secret Valley Escapes and want to stretch your legs without a full day's commitment.

The hill itself isn't dramatic - no scrambling required - but that's partly the appeal. You get moorland walking without the technical faffing about, and on a clear day the views south towards Holmfirth and beyond are worth the effort. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the open moorland a bit relentless if the weather turns. The terrain is boggy in places, so decent boots aren't optional.

Go early if you can. The Pennines aren't kind in afternoon mist, and once the cloud rolls in you've lost half the reason for being up there. Summer's the obvious choice, though the moorland can look lovely in autumn when the bracken turns bronze. The hill is free - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just the walk itself and whatever views the weather decides to grant you.

It fits well into a Pennine camper's schedule: close enough to Holmfirth for supplies, distant enough to feel like proper countryside. Pair it with walks around Thurlmoor Farm or further excursions if you're staying longer. A solid half-day outing, nothing more, nothing less.
