Pigeon Rock Mountain

The walk up Pigeon Rock Mountain takes you straight into the heart of what makes the Mourne Mountains genuinely special. It's not the tallest peak in the range - that honour goes to Slieve Donard - but what it lacks in height it makes up for in accessibility and views that punch well above its weight.

The summit itself is a proper rock scramble rather than a gentle stroll, which keeps the casual wanderers at bay. You'll get real 360-degree views across the mountains and, on a clear day, sight lines all the way to the Irish Sea. The rocky terrain means you're navigating boulders and rough ground, so proper walking boots are non-negotiable.

This is ideal for walkers with some hill experience rather than families with very young children. A fit adult can manage the ascent and descent in around two hours from Newry, though you'll want longer if you're stopping to take in the landscape. Go early morning if possible - the light's better and you'll likely have the summit to yourself.

For a camping holiday in the area, Pigeon Rock slots in perfectly. Greenview Glamping and Oakwood are both less than three miles away, making this a straightforward half-day outing. The Rock Caravan and Camping, slightly further out at five miles, also works well if you're basing yourself there. It's the sort of walk that appeals to people who've already done Slieve Donard and want something with less foot traffic but similar rewards.
