Picnic Area

There's a proper picnic area just outside Chelmsford where you can actually sit down without fighting for a bench or sharing your crisps with wasps. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - The Courts just 1.7 miles away, or Stuarts Wood a bit further out - and you want to break up the afternoon without driving far.

The setup is straightforward. You get tables, some shelter if you're lucky, and enough space to spread out without your neighbour's toddler wandering into your picnic. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. Families with younger kids will appreciate the low-key vibe, and it's ideal if you're between activities and need somewhere to eat lunch without sitting in the car.

Timing-wise, aim for mid-week if possible. Weekends can get busy, particularly during school holidays. There's no admission charge that we're aware of, though facilities might be limited outside peak season. Allow an hour or so - enough time to eat, let the children burn off some energy, and actually relax a bit. The picnic area doesn't demand much of your day, which is precisely why it works. It's functional rather than thrilling, but when you're on a camping holiday juggling mealtimes and keeping everyone happy, functional is often exactly what you need.
