RHS Garden Hyde Hall

Thirty-seven acres of proper gardening at its finest, just east of Chelmsford. RHS Garden Hyde Hall isn't a stroll-round-in-twenty-minutes kind of place - this is the real deal, with demonstration gardens, a working kitchen garden, and enough plant varieties to keep a serious gardener occupied for half a day.

The layout means you're walking through different zones: formal beds, woodland areas, a Mediterranean garden that somehow works in Essex, and seasonal displays that actually change depending on what's flowering. Spring and early summer are the money times if you're after colour. Winter's quieter but less crowded.

It's geared toward gardeners first, families second. If you've got kids under ten who aren't into plants, they'll get bored. But if you're properly interested in horticulture - whether you've got a garden to fill or just want to pinch ideas - you'll find yourself lingering. The plant sales area is excellent, and staff know what they're talking about.

If you're camped at Stuarts Wood or The Courts nearby, this works well as a morning visit before heading elsewhere. Not a full-day destination on its own, but combined with other Essex attractions, it slots in nicely. Check opening hours before you go - garden centers operate on their own schedule, not everyone's.

Worth it if you're genuinely interested in gardens. Not worth the drive if you're just after a nice walk.
