Pickerstone Ridge

The walk up Pickerstone Ridge rewards you with proper moorland views across Wensleydale - it's the sort of place where you can actually see why people move to Yorkshire and stay there. The ridge itself isn't dramatic in an Alpine sense, but it's got character. You're walking through open country with dry stone walls cutting across the landscape, and on a clear day the visibility is genuine. Allow a couple of hours from Leyburn, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to look back at the valley.

It's a solid walk for families who don't need vertical scrambling or technical bits - the paths are well-established and the gradient, while noticeable, isn't backbreaking. History buffs will find the old field systems interesting, though this isn't a tagged-up heritage trail. You won't find cafes or facilities up here, so bring water and snacks. If you're based at Cherish Glamping or Usha Gap Farm nearby, this makes a cracking morning out before heading back for lunch. The ridge sits nicely between a casual stroll and a serious hike. Wensleydale has better-known peaks, but Pickerstone Ridge does the job without the crowds.
