Perranporth Golf Club

The cliffs around Perranporth hold one of Cornwall's most dramatic golf courses, and it's the sort of place where you'll lose at least three balls to the Atlantic if you're not careful. Perranporth Golf Club sits right on the edge of the action - proper windy, often demanding, and absolutely brilliant on a clear day when you can see for miles across the water.

This is a links course through and through, which means rough grass, firm turf, and greens that run quick. The hole design makes good use of the terrain; you're constantly fighting elevation and wind. It's not a beginner's track, and it's definitely not somewhere to bring the family for a casual game - you'll need a handicap and a proper golf club membership or day rate to get on. The walk between holes can be proper steep in places, so while golfers are used to it, anyone coming along who doesn't play will find themselves stranded on the sidelines.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Tollgate Farm, Haven Perran Sands, or Treamble Valley are all within walking distance - and you're a keen golfer, this is worth booking in advance. The course fills up, especially in summer. Allow a full morning or afternoon for eighteen holes, longer if it's your first time on links grass. For non-golfers staying in the area, Perranporth itself has a cracking beach and better things to do than watching grown adults curse at golf balls.
