Perranporth beach

Three miles of golden sand backed by towering dunes - that's Perranporth, and it's one of Cornwall's most serious stretches of beach. The sweep is genuinely impressive, especially at low tide when you get that vast expanse of firm sand that makes you want to walk for hours. The waves are proper Atlantic rollers, which means surfers absolutely love it here, but there's plenty of space for families and swimmers too.

The town sits right behind the beach, so you're never far from a pasty or ice cream. Parking can be tricky in summer - arrive early or accept that you'll circle a bit. The beach works year-round, though winter storms can be dramatic and occasionally close parts of it. In summer it gets busy, understandably so.

Walkers should plan for at least two hours minimum - the length alone demands it. Families will find it brilliant if the kids are old enough to manage sand and sea; the shallow shelving means it's relatively safe for paddling. Surfers and bodyboarders obviously won't need convincing.

Stay at Haven Perran Sands or Tollgate Farm if you want to be basically on top of the sand - both are within walking distance. Trevornick and Parkdean Resorts' Holywell Bay site offer more facilities if you prefer that approach. The beach is free, naturally, and genuinely worth a full day rather than a quick visit. Don't expect hidden caves or secret spots - this is straightforward, excellent seaside in proper volume.
