Penllergare Valley Woods

The valley cuts through the Swansea suburbs like a proper escape route - all ancient woodland, open grassland, and the kind of quiet you don't expect three miles from the town centre. Penllergare Valley Woods is essentially a 135-acre spread of semi-natural terrain that's been left to do its own thing, with walking trails threading through stands of oak, ash, and beech. There's a mansion ruin tucked in here too, which gives the whole place a bit of historical ballast without being shouty about it.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially those after a proper leg-stretch without needing to drive into the Brecon Beacons. The trails are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the exposed roots a bit tiresome. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full loop; half an hour if you're just poking about near the entrance. It's free, which helps when you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Gowerton Caravan Club or South Wales Touring Park - both within easy striking distance.

Go mid-week if you value solitude. Weekends pull in the local dog-walkers and joggers, which is fine but takes the edge off the sense of discovery. The tree cover means it's decent even in drizzle, though after heavy rain the paths get claggy. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what you need for a morning out when you're based in Swansea and can't be bothered with the faffing about of heading further afield.
