Cefn Drum

The walk up Cefn Drum doesn't take long, which is either brilliant or a bit underwhelming depending on what you're after. It's a straightforward climb from the Swansea side through open moorland, and within an hour you're standing at the summit looking out across Carmarthenshire towards the Brecon Beacons. On a clear day the views are genuinely proper - you can pick out landmarks for miles. On a damp Welsh afternoon, less so.

This is walkers' terrain, mainly. The paths are well-defined and the ascent isn't punishing, making it a decent shout for families who want something achievable without needing a full day. Kids could manage it without too much complaint, though there's nothing at the top beyond the views and a sense of achievement. No cafe, no visitor centre, no attractions beyond the landscape itself.

Time-wise, allow ninety minutes return if you're not dawdling. Free to access, obviously - just park sensibly and go. Spring and autumn are your best bet weatherwise, though locals will tell you it can be boggy underfoot after rain.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - River View Touring Park is closest at 3.5 miles - Cefn Drum works as a morning walk before heading into Swansea proper. It's not a reason to plan your whole trip around, but it's a decent leg-stretcher that doesn't feel like wasted time.
