It's a modest pond rather than a grand reservoir, tucked into Carmarthenshire countryside just outside Swansea's reach, and that's precisely why it works. There's a walking circuit around the water - nothing strenuous, maybe forty minutes if you dawdle - with benches dotted around for sitting and thinking or eating a sandwich.

This is proper walker territory. If you're staying at South Wales Touring Park or Gateway Resort near Swansea, Penllergaer makes an easy morning excursion. Kids won't be wildly entertained for hours - there's water, some reeds, the occasional bird, and that's the honest sum of it - but primary school age children enjoy spotting things and paddling about on the paths. The real appeal is the quiet. No visitor centre hype, no facilities, just open access and decent walking.
