Loughor Monument

The Romans left their mark all over Wales, but Loughor Monument is one of those spots where you actually feel the weight of it. Perched above the Loughor estuary near Swansea, what remains is the fragmentary base of a Roman fort from the 1st century AD - nothing you'd write home about visually, but absolutely worth the detour if you're into that sort of history. The site itself is modest: a grassed-over mound with the faintest traces of stonework, the kind of thing that rewards a bit of imagination and prior reading. On a clear day the estuary views are rather good, rolling out towards Carmarthenshire's coastline. History buffs will get the most satisfaction here, particularly those doing the Roman Wales circuit. Families with older children might find it worthwhile as a proper walking spot combined with the views, though younger kids will likely lose interest within twenty minutes. The monument's free to access - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just the landscape and what's left of the fort. Allow thirty minutes to an hour if you're genuinely interested, longer if you're using it as a break point on a bigger walk. The real value is staying nearby at one of the caravan parks dotted around - Gowerton Caravan and Motorhome Club is barely a mile away - and treating it as part of a wider exploration of the area's Roman heritage rather than a standalone destination. Worth the visit if you're in the region, but don't rearrange your holiday to see it.
