Loughor Estuary

The Loughor Estuary spreads out like a vast, muddy canvas between Swansea and Carmarthenshire, where the river meets the sea in a tangle of salt marsh and shifting tidal flats. It's not a manicured attraction with gift shops and tea rooms - it's a proper working estuary, the kind of place where you actually feel like you're looking at something real rather than something designed for visitors.

This is birdwatcher territory, full stop. The mudflats and marshes draw waders and wildfowl year-round, though autumn and winter are peak season when you'll spot thousands of birds moving through. Bring binoculars and patience. The light here is remarkable - grey, moody, ever-changing - which means photographers tend to get a bit obsessed with it.

There's no formal visitor infrastructure, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your outlook. You can walk the margins, access points exist near Gowerton and Llanrhidian, and the Wales Coast Path runs alongside parts of it. Allow an hour or two for a decent explore, though serious birders lose track of time entirely.

If you're based at Gowerton Caravan and Motorhome Club or South Wales Touring Park - both within easy reach - it's a solid morning out. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull; there's nothing to do except look, walk, and spot birds. But if you want to see the Swansea area beyond the beaches and towns, this estuary gives you the real geography and wildlife that's actually going on here. Well worth the detour for anyone interested in wetlands and migration routes.
