Pendle Hill

The walk up Pendle Hill is less about the summit and more about what happened on it - and that's what makes it genuinely compelling. This isn't a particularly high peak at 557 metres, but it's the dark history that draws people here. The Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 took place nearby, and the local folklore clings to this moorland like mist.

From Nelson, it's a straightforward climb up a well-trodden path. Most walkers tackle it in under two hours there and back, though the final push gets steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. The views across the Ribble Valley are decent reward - on a clear day you can see the Lake District in the distance. It's free to walk, naturally, since it's open moorland.

History enthusiasts will find this far more rewarding than casual walkers. If you're after pure views and exercise, there are better hills nearby. But if you're the type who enjoys the stories woven into a landscape, Pendle delivers. Families with younger kids might find the ascent tedious without the historical hook to keep them engaged.

The hill works well as part of a longer holiday around Lancashire's rural parks. Pendle View Holiday Park sits just 4.3 miles away and gives you a proper base for exploring both the Ribble Valley and the wider moorland. Holgates Ribble Valley, slightly further out at 3.7 miles, offers good access if you want to base yourself near Clitheroe instead.
