Pen Y Mwdwl

The walk up Pen Y Mwdwl is proper steep but short - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to the summit from the parking area near Abergele, and honestly it's worth the slog. The view from the top opens up across the whole Conwy valley, with the coast visible on a clear day. On a grey Welsh afternoon I was there, cloud was rolling in from the sea, but you could still make out the shape of the land dropping away toward the Irish Sea.

It's not a difficult scramble, just relentless uphill on a well-trodden path. Families with older kids will manage fine - younger ones might struggle with the gradient rather than the distance. The summit itself is exposed and windswept, so take a jumper even if it's warm at the bottom. There's a trig point up there if you're the sort who collects them.

If you're based at Plas Farm Caravan & Lodge Park just outside Abergele, this makes a straightforward morning outing before lunch. It's close enough that you won't waste half your holiday driving, but feels properly wild once you're on the ridge. The real appeal is the walk itself rather than any facilities at the top - bring a flask and a decent map. Weather can turn fast in these hills, so check the forecast and leave early.
