Pen y Craig Gron

The walk up Pen y Craig Gron from Llanrwst takes you through proper Welsh moorland - nothing too technical, just a steady climb that rewards you with views across the Conwy Valley. On a clear day you can see right across to Snowdonia, and the ridge itself feels genuinely wild despite being within an hour of the coast.

It's not a hugely dramatic peak - more of a rolling hill with teeth - but that's rather the point. Walkers after something achievable without needing crampons or a guide will find it excellent. The terrain is mixed underfoot, combining grassland with rockier sections that keep things interesting. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

The real charm here is the isolation. You won't find crowds, and the lack of a visitor centre or café means you're genuinely away from things. Bring water and snacks - the nearest settlement is Llanrwst, a small market town below, which has proper cafés and shops if you need supplies before or after.

If you're based at Maenan Abbey Caravan Park or Erw Glas Glamping just down the way, this makes a cracking half-day outing. The proximity to better-known peaks like Snowdon means most tourists never bother, which is frankly their loss. It's the sort of walk where you'll actually hear birdsong.
