Pen Rhiwbie

The walk up Pen Rhiwbie from Llandovery is steep, proper steep, and takes the best part of an hour if you're moving at a steady pace. But the view from the top - across the rolling Towy Valley and into Carmarthenshire - makes it worth every burning calf muscle. You're looking at about 650 metres of elevation, nothing mountainous by Welsh standards, but enough to feel like you've earned your lunch.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb, so fit families with kids aged eight or older will manage fine on a clear day. The ground's rough in places and muddy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Allow a full morning if you want to poke around the summit and enjoy the views without rushing back down.

Llandovery itself - a proper little market town with decent pubs - makes a good base for tackling this and exploring the wider Towy Valley. If you're staying at Welsh Glamping just outside town, you could easily pop out for an afternoon walk here. The peak doesn't have the drama of peaks further west, but on a day when the clouds cooperate, it's a cracking spot to get above the landscape and see where you've been driving through.

Go early if you can. The light's better in the morning, and you'll have the hillside mostly to yourself. The descent is rough on the knees - take it slowly.
