Peel Dod

The walk up Peel Dod is short, sharp, and genuinely rewarding if you're based around Carlisle and fancy a proper fell without committing your whole afternoon. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards - nothing that'll have you gasping for breath on the final push - but the views across the Pennines justify the effort.

Start from the car park near Greystoke and you're looking at roughly an hour up, forty minutes down if you don't dally. The path is well-trodden and never gets too steep, though it's exposed on the higher sections so wind can be a factor. On a clear day the perspective northward is excellent, stretching back towards the Scottish border.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids who don't mind a steady gradient, but younger ones might find it a bit samey on the way up - there's not much to break up the walk, no dramatic drops or curiosities to hold attention. If you're staying at High Hall Farm Campsite or Drybeck Farm, you've got something genuinely local that doesn't require hours of driving beforehand.

Go midweek if possible. Weekends can get busy, and part of Peel Dod's appeal is the quiet - a chance to get some proper fell air without fighting through crowds. The weather changes fast here, so check conditions before setting out. Free to walk, obviously, and there's no real infrastructure on the summit itself, so bring water and something decent to eat.
