Walking through Broomrigg Plantation feels like stepping into someone's back garden - a proper working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve. It's mixed woodland just outside Carlisle, the sort of place where you'll find yourself crunching through leaf litter between conifers and broadleaves, with decent paths that don't require hiking boots. The woodland canopy does what woodland should do: it shuts out the noise of the world for a bit.

This is one for people who want a proper walk without the mountain scenery. Families with older kids will get a solid hour or two out of it, though younger ones might find it a touch monotonous if you're not the type to stop and look at moss. If you're into forestry or just need somewhere quiet to clear your head between campsite activities, it works well. Walkers staying at High Hall Farm or Drybeck Farm - both barely a couple of miles away - could do far worse than making this their afternoon spot.

Go when the light's decent - early morning in autumn is particularly good, though it's worth noting that being a working plantation, you might occasionally bump into forestry work.
