Newbiggin Fell

The walk up Newbiggin Fell takes roughly an hour from the car park, and it's one of those Cumbrian peaks that rewards you without demanding mountaineering credentials. The fell itself isn't dramatic - no jagged ridges or alpine theatre - but the views across the Eden Valley towards the Pennines are genuinely worth the leg work, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the big names in the distance.

It's a solid choice for families who want something more substantial than a nature reserve potter but less ambitious than a full Lake District assault. Older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might need encouragement on the steeper sections. The ground underfoot can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional here.

Walkers using the nearby campsites - High Hall Farm is the closest at just over three miles away - will find this a natural half-day outing that doesn't require driving off somewhere else. Drybeck Farm and Eden Valley Glamping are within easy reach too if you're basing yourself in the area. Carlisle, about twelve miles west, has all the amenities you'll need before heading out.

Go in the morning if you want decent light on the views. The fell can feel a bit exposed when the weather closes in, so timing matters. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's no particular season that makes it unmissable - spring wildflowers are pleasant enough, but autumn gives you sharper air and better visibility across the valley.
