Dunwalloght Castle

The ruins of Dunwalloght Castle sit quietly a few miles outside Carlisle, and frankly, they're not what you'd call dramatic. What remains is essentially a mound with some stonework - the sort of place that rewards a bit of patience and historical imagination rather than immediate gratification. It's a Roman fort site that later became a medieval stronghold, which means there's genuinely interesting archaeology here if you're willing to do the groundwork.

You're looking at around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much poking around you do. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I could see, and no obvious facilities. Bring an OS map or download some background reading beforehand - it makes the visit exponentially better. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already into castles and history; it's not a place with steps to climb or chambers to explore. But for serious history walkers or anyone digging into Cumbria's Roman past, it's worth the detour from Carlisle.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - High Hall Farm, Drybeck Farm, or Eden Valley Glamping are all within a couple of miles - you could easily slot this into a morning walk without making a special trip. It pairs well with exploring the wider Solway area. The location feels isolated and atmospheric rather than polished, which is either its charm or its weakness depending on what you want from a day out.
