Pedder's Wood

The woodland around Pedder's Wood near Garstang offers a proper escape if you're after quiet forest walks rather than manicured attractions. This is genuine Lancashire countryside - old trees, soft ground underfoot, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's the sort of spot locals know about and tourists miss, which is exactly why it works.

What you're really doing here is walking. There are decent trails threading through the wood, nothing too punishing, though the ground gets boggy after rain so bring sensible boots. The appeal is straightforward: peaceful woodland, wildlife spotting if you're lucky, and breathing in something other than carpark fumes. Families with primary-aged kids will get a couple of hours out of it easily. Older teenagers might find it a bit dull unless they're keen on nature.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of - this isn't that kind of place. Which is half the charm, frankly. Entry appears to be free. The real draw is combining it with your base at one of the nearby caravan parks like Claylands, just under a mile away, or Gibsons Barn a bit further on. You can park up, do your walk in the morning, then potter around Garstang market town in the afternoon if you want some actual shopping and cafes.

Worth the detour if you're staying locally and need a break from the caravan. As a standalone day trip from elsewhere? Probably not. But for campers wanting a decent leg-stretch without faffing about with entrance fees and queues, it does the job.
