Pedders Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination you'd plan your whole day around, Pedders Plantation sits just outside Garstang in Lancashire and offers exactly what you'd expect from a managed forest - quiet paths, tall conifers, and the kind of peace that makes you forget the A6 is anywhere nearby.

The place is straightforward. You turn up, walk among the trees, maybe spot a bit of wildlife if you're lucky. It's the sort of spot where locals let their dogs off lead and families with young kids can actually manage the terrain without drama. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or tea room, just woodland doing what woodland does best. The paths are decent enough, though it can get muddy after rain - proper Lancashire weather tends to leave its mark.

For walkers staying at any of the nearby caravan parks - Claylands is closest at under a mile away - this makes a useful morning outing. Not a full day commitment, more like a ninety-minute job if you meander. It's free and there's no faffing about with opening times or entrance fees, which is refreshing. Families will get what they need out of it, though older kids might find it a bit samey if they're after something with more going on.

The real value here is proximity. If you're based at one of the local sites - Gibsons Barn or Orchard Glamping are only a couple of miles further out - it's worth a proper explore. Not life-changing, but that's not always what a forest walk needs to be.
