Peat Cott Chapel

You'll find this tiny chapel tucked away on the slopes above Tavistock, looking rather like it's been plucked straight from a Victorian postcard. Peat Cott Chapel is exactly what it says on the tin - a small, modest place of worship with genuine character. The building itself tells the story, all weathered stone and simple lines, the kind of chapel that feels more lived-in than grand.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not the sort of place you drive to and pop in for ten minutes - you'll want to approach it on foot, ideally from one of the Dartmoor paths that crisscross the area. The journey matters more than the destination, truth be told. The interior is straightforward and serene, nothing fancy, which is rather the point.

This works brilliantly as a half-day add-on when you're based at Langstone Manor or exploring Dartmoor National Park nearby. Allow a good two hours if you're making a proper walking day of it, less if you're just passing through. The chapel itself won't detain you for more than fifteen minutes, but the moorland setting makes the whole outing worthwhile.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn offer the best weather for tackling the approach, and mornings tend to be quieter. It's the sort of spot where solitude genuinely adds to the experience. Not one for rushing.
