National Trust - Buckland Abbey

The moment you walk through Buckland Abbey's grounds, you're standing in the actual home of Sir Francis Drake - the real one, not some tourist reconstruction. This 13th-century monastery turned Tudor mansion sits just outside Tavistock and contains the Drake Drum, which legend says will sound of its own accord if England's ever in mortal danger. Whether you believe that nonsense or not, the place has proper atmosphere.

Inside, you'll find portraits, period furniture, and an absorbing Naval Museum that charts Drake's circumnavigation. The grounds are genuinely lovely for a wander - not vast, but enough to keep you occupied for two hours without rushing. Kids will find the stories engaging enough, though they might get restless if you're the sort to read every placard.

It's a National Trust property, so entry involves membership or a day ticket (check their website for current prices). Summer weekends get busy; aim for a weekday if you can. Allow a good two hours to do it justice - one if you're just keen on the grounds.
