Paul’s Knob

The name alone raises eyebrows, but Paul's Knob is a proper little summit in the Chilterns near Berkhamsted - one of those walks that locals know well and visitors often miss. It's not dramatic: you're looking at around 250 metres of elevation, so hardly Alpine, but the views across the Buckinghamshire countryside are genuinely worth the leg work.

The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes from the bottom, which makes it ideal for families who don't want a full day commitment but still fancy something a bit more substantial than a park stroll. Once you're up there, it's the kind of spot where you can properly see across to the Chiltern ridges on a clear day. The terrain is straightforward woodland trail - no scrambling required, though it can be muddy after rain.

Historically minded types might find the Chiltern Hills themselves more interesting than this particular knob, to be honest. It's less about the destination and more about the climb and the views. You'll want to allow an hour minimum if you're bringing children or stopping for photos, though fit walkers will be up and back down in under forty minutes.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Chiltern Yurts is closest at 2.6 miles, or Merlin Farm if you want proximity to Whipsnade Zoo - this works as an easy morning mission before heading elsewhere. Worth adding to your itinerary rather than making a special trip on its own, but on a decent day, you won't regret the walk.
