Pattison House

The Roman fort at Pattison House sits just outside Barnard Castle, easy enough to reach but not somewhere you'll stumble upon by accident. What you're looking at are the remains of a military installation from the 1st or 2nd century - earthworks mostly, ditches and ramparts that tell you exactly how the Romans organised their defences. It's atmospheric rather than dramatic, the kind of place where you need to use your imagination a bit.

This appeals most to serious Roman history types and walking enthusiasts. If you're just after dramatic ruins or reconstructed buildings, you might find it underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I'm aware of. But if you're the sort who finds excitement in understanding landscape archaeology, reading the lie of the land to work out what happened here two thousand years ago, it's genuinely rewarding.

Allow a decent walk to explore properly - maybe an hour if you're taking your time. The countryside around here is lovely for rambling anyway, so you can easily combine it with a longer loop. Given how close it is to Barnard Castle town itself, this works well as a half-day add-on during a park holiday at either Leekworth or Mickleton Mill. Both are within reasonable driving distance, and you'd likely fit this in between other activities rather than making it the sole purpose of a visit.
