Park Here for Westhay Farm

Westhay Farm nature reserve sits just outside Bridport, a working agricultural landscape that's far more interesting than the name might suggest. This is proper countryside - the kind of place where you actually spot things rather than just walk round hoping you will. The reserve protects a mix of grassland and wetland habitat that attracts birds, insects, and the occasional curious walker who's strayed from the coastal path.

It's best suited to keen birders and anyone with a genuine interest in farmland ecology. Casual strollers might find it a bit sparse - there's no visitor centre, no café, no marked trails with interpretive boards. You're looking at a low-key spot where you bring your binoculars, watch the sky, and spend an hour or so pottering about. Children under twelve will probably get restless unless they're the type who actually care about spotting a linnet or a lapwing.

If you're staying at Newlands Holiday Park or Seadown Holiday Park - both within walking distance - it's worth knowing about as a morning activity before heading into Bridport proper for lunch. The Golden Cap Holiday Park and others a bit further afield are close enough for a short drive if you're into your natural history. Free access appears standard for Dorset Wildlife Trust reserves, though you should check locally as policies shift. Best visited in spring and early summer when bird activity peaks. Allow 60 to 90 minutes maximum unless you're genuinely keen on wildlife photography.
