Charmouth Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground at Charmouth is one of those places you'll stumble upon rather than actively seek out, and that's rather the point. It's a modest nature reserve that sits between the village and the coast, offering decent walking trails through scrubland and grassland with views across to Golden Cap - that striking golden cliffside you'll see from miles around.

What you get here is essentially a bit of proper countryside without the fuss. The paths are straightforward, the space feels genuinely wild despite being just outside Charmouth, and it's excellent for a two-hour ramble if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Seadown or Newlands. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile. Families with younger kids might manage an hour before restlessness sets in, though the terrain is easy enough.

The real draw is its position in relation to the wider coastal walk. You can link this with explorations towards Golden Cap Holiday Park's area or head towards Bridport's coastal paths. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a solid component of a longer day out if you're staying locally.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, and the light across the grassland in late afternoon is genuinely lovely. Worth an afternoon if you're staying within a few miles, less essential if you're only passing through.
