Parish church of St Lawrence

The church sits on a slight rise in the village, unremarkable from the road until you step inside. St Lawrence is a proper medieval parish church - the kind of building that's been quietly absorbing centuries without making a fuss about it. Norman origins, some Saxon work if you look closely enough, and enough stonework to keep architecture enthusiasts happy for twenty minutes.

Inside it's genuinely peaceful. High windows let light fall across worn stone floors, and there's that particular smell - old wood, stone dust, candle wax - that takes you back. The chancel has some decent medieval features, and if you're into that sort of thing, there are details worth lingering over. But this isn't a showstopper. It won't grab you by the throat like some of Northumberland's grander churches.

Who gets the most from a visit? History buffs doing the local circuit, walkers passing through the village, families after a brief cultural stop between the holiday parks. Give it thirty minutes, tops. It's free to wander in - churches like this usually are - and there's something rather nice about the informality of it.

If you're based at Woodland Chase Glamping or Coast and Castles just down the road, it's worth popping over before heading to Alnwick itself. Close enough for a detour, substantial enough to justify the walk. Don't come expecting drama, but do come expecting somewhere real.
