Owley Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower above muddy footpaths that snake through this pocket of proper Cheshire woodland, just a short drive from Northwich. Owley Wood feels refreshingly wild compared to some of the more manicured country parks in the area - expect fallen logs, brambles catching your sleeves, and that earthy smell of decomposing leaves underfoot.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place, and you'll spot plenty of them threading through the trees on weekend mornings. The paths aren't marked particularly well, which adds to the adventure but might frustrate families with young children who prefer clearer routes. Teenagers will enjoy the slightly mysterious atmosphere, especially in autumn when the canopy creates dramatic shadows.

Allow about an hour for a good wander, though keen walkers could easily stretch it to two by exploring the various unofficial trails that branch off the main paths. The wood connects nicely with the wider Cheshire countryside if you fancy extending your ramble.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Blakemere Holiday Park or Delamere Lake makes this an easy morning excursion before heading to more structured attractions. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for burning off energy and getting some fresh air, rather than expecting anything too polished or visitor-friendly.
