Outgang Hill

The walk up Outgang Hill near Skipton rewards you with proper Dales views - nothing fancy, just straightforward Yorkshire moorland stretching out in all directions. It's a modest summit by any measure, but that's rather the point. You get the satisfaction of reaching the top without needing specialist gear or a full day carved out of your schedule.

The route itself is straightforward enough, though it does climb steadily. Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds here compared to the honeypot peaks further north. The terrain underfoot is typical moorland - a bit boggy in places, firm in others - and the whole affair takes a couple of hours return from Skipton if you're keeping a decent pace. On a clear day you can pick out decent landmarks across the valley, though it's not the sort of view that stops you dead in your tracks.

Family groups with older kids will manage this fine, though younger legs might find it a slog. It's genuinely free, being open moorland, and there's no visitor facility to speak of - bring what you need with you.

If you're based at Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wood Nook Caravan Park, both within walking distance of town, this makes a decent half-day outing alongside exploring Skipton itself. It's not revolutionary, but it's solid walking country without the tourist machinery. Sometimes that's exactly what you want.
