Kilnsey Park

The crag dominates the valley like something out of a climbing magazine. Kilnsey Park sits just outside Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, and the main draw is that limestone cliff - a proper 50-metre vertical wall that pulls in rock climbers from across the region. For walkers, there's a gentle loop around the park itself, nothing strenuous, maybe half an hour if you're taking photographs. The village of Kilnsey is tiny, almost nothing to it, but the crag makes it unmissable.

You'll see climbers here most weekends tackling routes that range from novice to genuinely terrifying. If you're not into rock climbing, that's fine - families with younger kids often just do the walk and grab lunch in nearby Skipton afterwards. The crag's been a training ground for serious mountaineers for decades, so there's a bit of that mountaineering heritage to absorb even if you're just passing through.

Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is just 2.2 miles away, as is Wood Nook Caravan Park - both rated excellently - so it slots perfectly into a Dales break. Come mid-week if you want to avoid the climbing crowds. Parking at the site itself is limited but usually manageable. The walk won't take long, but the setting is proper Dales: green fields, limestone walls, that dramatic crag looming overhead.
