Osprey Watch

The osprey viewpoint near Keswick is worth knowing about if you're serious about birdwatching in the Lake District. You're looking at a proper observation spot set up to track the breeding pairs that return to Bassenthwaite Lake each spring - these are the birds that made a comeback to England after decades of absence, so there's genuine conservation story here.

What you actually do is stand at the designated viewing area with binoculars and hope the ospreys cooperate. Sometimes they're obvious, diving for fish or perched near the nest. Other times you'll stare at the water for half an hour and see bugger all. That's birdwatching for you. The viewing platform itself is simple enough - no fancy facilities, just a place to look and listen. Allow 30 minutes to an hour if the birds are active, less if you're unlucky.

This is absolutely a specialist draw. Kids will find it tedious unless they're already keen on wildlife. Regular walkers passing through won't get much from it. But if you're holed up at one of the nearby campsites - Kestrel Lodge or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club are your closest options - and you've got binoculars and patience, it's a worthwhile detour during breeding season (roughly April to August).
