Onion Hill

The walk up Onion Hill is a proper Yorkshire slog, but the views across the Dales from the top make it worth the effort. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District fells - but there's something satisfying about a straightforward climb through moorland that rewards you with 360-degree views of rolling hills and distant ridges.

From Skipton, it's easy to get to, and the walk takes a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and where you start from. Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might struggle with the monotony of the ascent - it's not technical or dangerous, just relentless. The moorland itself is fairly open, so you're not fighting through dense woodland.

What you get at the summit is honest walking country rather than Instagram drama. Clear days give you real sight lines across to Pendle Hill and into the heart of the Dales. Misty days? Much less rewarding, if I'm honest.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Coxons Farm Glamping Pods or Wharfedale's caravan park are both close - Onion Hill works well as a half-day walk that doesn't eat into your holiday. Pair it with a proper exploration of Bolton Abbey or Skipton's market and high street, and you've got a decent day sorted. It's the sort of walk that older walkers and those after a proper bit of fresh air will genuinely enjoy.
